Frequently Asked Questions About International Freight

If you’re sending a shipment large enough to qualify as freight, then ocean freight will usually be the cheapest way to ship your goods. It can be one of the slowest modes of transportation, but, with a little planning ahead, our team can help you set up a shipping schedule that keeps your inventory at optimal levels.

To learn more about shipping cargo via ocean freight, check out our article, “6 Surprising Things You Might Not Know About Ocean Freight.”

A freight forwarder works with its customers to move cargo from origin to destination by coordinating with different transportation providers. For example, a freight forwarder might arrange to move a container full of retail items via ocean freight from Shanghai, China to Long Beach, California; schedule drayage service to move the container from the Port of Long Beach to a nearby warehouse; and then hire a trucking company to deliver those goods to their final destination, such as a retail outlet.

An international freight forwarder is a great place to start. These service providers can arrange multiple modes of transportation to get your shipment exactly where it needs to go. (Learn more about what freight forwarders do.)

If you decided to manage your own overseas freight shipment—and book direct with each carrier—you’d need to coordinate each leg of the journey on your own. That might mean arranging for trucking (delivery and pickup) services, air freight or ocean freight, and any other services in between, like drayage for ocean freight. It would also mean managing all of those providers closely to keep your shipment moving.

A freight forwarder can simplify all of this by offering an all-in-one international freight solution.

The cost of your shipment depends on factors such as: the origin and destination of your freight; the type of freight you want to ship; how much freight you want to ship; and what kind of services you’ll need (pickup, dropoff, etc.).

If you’re sending from one of the other 49 United States or a U.S. territory, shipping to Hawaii is not considered international. If you want to learn more about shipping to Hawaii, check out our article, “How Does Freight Get to Hawaii?”
Because Guam is a U.S. territory, shipping to Guam from the 50 United States or another U.S. territory is not considered international. That said, moving freight to an island as remote as Guam can be tricky. To learn more about shipping freight to Guam, take a look at our blog post, “How Long Does It Take to Ship Freight to Guam?”

Puerto Rico is a US territory, so shipping to the island from the 50 United States or another U.S. territory is not considered international. However, plenty of international shipments from global destinations make their way to Puerto Rico. For example, we work with several customers who ship freight directly from Asia to Puerto Rico.
