Frequently Asked Questions About Logistics Services

Logistics services are the supply chain activities that keep goods moving from the supplier/manufacturer to the end consumer. These include services such as project management, warehousing, distribution, sorting and segregating, and the project management that ties it all together. Additional solutions such as freight, transloading, and final mile delivery may also fall under the banner of logistics services.

Some companies choose to outsource their logistics services. Read more about the advantages and disadvantages of logistics outsourcing.

A logistics provider—who might also be called a 3PL (third-party logistics company)—handles the movement of goods for another company and may help manage their supply chain operations. For example, this might mean coordinating all of that company’s freight, storing and managing their inventory, and even shipping orders to customers.

“Final mile” refers to the last leg of transportation, which delivers goods to an end consumer. For example, when the USPS delivers an Amazon package to a customer, that’s considered final-mile delivery. If a driver is moving office furniture from a warehouse to the office building where it will be installed, that’s also considered final-mile delivery.

Cross-docking is a logistics strategy used to keep freight moving quickly and storage costs at a minimum. In a cross-docking scenario, goods are unloaded from one mode of transportation, then set aside for a short period of time before being reloaded onto another mode of transportation.

For example, take a container coming from the Port of Los Angeles. It might pull into a loading dock, where all the pallets are off-loaded. Rather than taking all the pallets into the warehouse, several of them are simply moved to another area of the loading dock. A truck pulls up a few hours later, and those goods are loaded onto the truck and sent on their way. That’s an example of cross-docking.

Transloading is similar to cross-docking, in that it involves transitioning goods from one mode of transportation to another. The major difference is that transloading involves repackaging goods for transit. For example, a 3PL may receive 10 pallets of goods that need to be depalletized, sorted, repalletized, and distributed to a list of retail locations. That’s an example of transloading.

3PL stands for 3rdParty Logistics. A 3PL is a company that offers outsourced logistics services to other companies. To learn more about 3PLs, check out our article, “Logistics Terms Made Easy: What Is a 3PL?”
